HappyDay Farms CSA Newsletter August 22nd :)

We’re moving into shorter days, I’ve noticed that it’s getting light later each morning.  It’s a comforting feeling to be keyed in to the changing of the seasons, so that each day brings a perceptible difference in the world around me.          It’s certainly starting to feel like fall around here; the last couple of nights have cooled off a bit, which is most welcome after the heat wave we’ve been enduring.  Much like last year, we’re seeing many of our summer crops start to go by the wayside about a month earlier than I would have expected.  Over the next few weeks we’ll be pulling out most of our cucumbers, squash, and a few rows of tomatoes as...

HappyDay Farms CSA Newsletter August 15th :)

Boy we’re back in the August heatwave!  My Grandpa used to say that during these warm nights when it doesn’t get below 70, things never stop growing.  It sure seems to be the case here on the farm, so long as I can keep the water flowing.        Things remain somewhat tricky with the ag system; I’m coming to believe that the float valve on the main ag tank is not letting in as much water as it should, which means that more water is being pumped up to the top of the hill to the big storage tanks, and less is being put into the ag tank that we run off at all times.  This has been a frustrating...

HappyDay Farms CSA Newsletter August 1st :)

Yes indeed, we have arrived in the month of August!  We’re still battling water issues on the farm; I’ve found that I need to clean the filters much more than I thought initially to keep the irrigation working properly.  Sunday evening is filter cleaning time; I take an old toothbrush and scrub out the filters that are attached prior to each timer around the farm.         We clean the main filter every day, but there is so much algae and silt coming through that we also need to clean the smaller pre-timer filters.  One of these days we’ll get around to buying the big boy filter for 2 grand that self-cleans and lives down by the pond.  It’s one of...

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, and hopefully they don’t fall off.  We’re definitely gonna roll it till the wheels fall off, although sometimes it feels like it could happen at any minute.  Things are moving so fast, and there’s so much to do, that there are times when it feels like I’m gonna lose my mind.  But then I get it together and keep on trucking.          Lots of meetings, lots of policy work, lots of farming.  That’s what we’ve got going on; definitely looking forward to the brief respite that occurs around the summer solstice.  We’re about a week out from having the last successions of summer crops in the ground,...

HappyDay Farms CSA Newsletter, May 1st:)

We’ve moved into May, and it is exciting!  Things are full steam ahead here on the farm as we’ve moved into upplanting and planting out the first rounds of hot crops, while we’re still in the thick of greens and heading crops.  Cabbages and cauliflower have gone out, one more round to go.  The first round of beets are in, and the third round of salad mix goes out this coming week, with another set coming along shortly.            The days are long enough to accomplish many things; this is my favorite time of year, though I say that throughout the course of the seasons.  I love this time period of long days that aren’t yet too hot. ...
